In many ways black men and homosexuality don’t go together at all. In fact, 33 percent of young black men who have sex with other black men are HIV infected because the subject of homosexuality among black men is considered taboo. It’s not okay to talk about it, and it’s not okay to admit that you are gay, at least in most cases. Most of this can be traced back to a cultural obsession with being macho, or manly, or whatever you want to call it among African American men. The gay culture is considered both a white man’s preoccupation and highly effeminate, both things that don’t jive with being a black man in most urban areas. In these urban areas the culture dictates that a black man’s duty in life is to be a father, a provider, and a strong male role model for others. This attitude doesn’t allow for homosexuality to creep into the picture. This attitude also prevents black men who have sex with other black men from taking the simplest precautions, such as using condoms. Instead the bathhouses of mostly ethnic urban areas are populated with black men who have black gay sex with other black men but don’t consider themselves gay and don’t acknowledge the need to use condoms because HIV is a white man’s disease.

What’s interesting about this equation is that there’s a thriving section of the porn industry that focuses strictly on black men fucking other black men. I’m sure some of these actors claim that they are simply “gay for pay,” but someone’s buying all those DVDs and subscribing to all those websites, and it’s not just white guys interested in big dicks (although they do make up a portion of the buyers, let’s not kid ourselves).

The most interesting thing I find about black gay porn is that you don’t really ever see the presence of twinks, which is a huge element in gay porn starring white guys. This is because, for the most part, black gay porn is exceedingly macho. The movies have titles like “Black Force,” “Black Men Do!,” “Big, Black, and Beautiful,” and “Black n’ Large.” There’s nothing about effeminate black men, or black twinks, or anything like that. If anything you’ll see black guys fucking white twinks, although even that’s pretty rare. Of course, this is all probably just a result of the cultural pressures on black men, but it seems like porn could lead the way in this case. Perhaps if porn movies featured black men having sex without having to put up a macho front that would spread to the wider world. Won’t it be a great day when porn is able to lead the way in safe sex teaching, the spread of cultural benevolence, and ending a huge problem of denial amongst an entire culture?
