
This town played some of the major roles in fight for gay rights where many battles were fought and won. It started after the WWII when many soldiers, including those discharged for homosexuality, decided to settle there. During the 60s the gay movement was influenced by anti-war and civil rights movements but some of the crucial moments were in late 70s when murder of Harvey Milk took place. It was knows as White Night Riots. He wanted to teach the gay community to say the word gay with pride and it seems that he succeeded. AIDS brought new moments into life of gay community in a way when ACT-UP and Queer Nation had demonstrations in order to show that it was not just a gay men's disease and that research should be made to find a cure.
Today SF is one of the places that you might consider a gay paradise with many places to visit and stay. When you arrive in San Francisco first thing you will be looking for a hotels and don't worry - no one will ask seeing two men together if they want separate rooms.
